As you contemplate what you should do during Lent, remember that prayer is an important component of the season. The Bible says in Luke 18:1 AMP, “Now Jesus was telling the disciples a parable to make the point that at all times they ought to pray and not give up and lose heart.”
Prayer is necessary when the objective is change. Man attempts to bring change by their own might. They want to be able to say they did it. While it is possible to make some changes by discipline, there are some things that are outside of the capacity of man to change. When King David found himself in trouble with God for wrongdoing, he went before God and prayed: “Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a right and steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.” Psalm 51-10-11. David recognized that he had a heart problem but only God can fix the problem of a wicked heart.
God heard David’s prayer and God forgave him. There are issues of the heart that people face that can be difficult to conquer. There is no better arena than fasting and prayer to break up that problem of the heart. In Luke there were two men who went to the place of prayer. One felt that his actions were enough to be righteous before God. He focused on the things he did. Paul shot down that argument Ephesians 2:9: “not as a result of [your] works [nor your attempts to keep the Law], so that no one will [be able to] boast or take credit in any way [for his salvation].” The other man just stood afar off and asked God to have mercy on him. Man’s focus is the outside; God’s focus is the heart.
Thought for Today: Prayer brings change
Have a blessed day and walk in faith and victory.
