Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Philippians 2:3 MSG
Have you ever observed children when they want to be first? They push each other and are constantly trying to be the one at the front. When they are playing, it can be amusing but if you are the parent of one of those children, you might not be amused. But competition is not limited to children; adults are competitive also. They would do all they can to get ahead.
This was not what the Apostle Paul wanted to see in the community of faith. Paul understood that success comes from God. Psalm 75:7 says, “God rules: he brings this one down to his knees, pulls that one up on her feet.” Therefore it is useless to push your way to the front. God has purpose for your life and that purpose will unfold in God’s time and through God’s plan. When Moses left Egypt, he never expected to return; he said goodbye in his heart. But God had purpose in him so when it was God’s appointed time He pulled Moses up on his feet and sent him with a message to Pharaoh.
Sometimes, it may seem that you have to do some fancy footwork to get ahead. You have been waiting for a long time and you feel that maybe God has forgotten you in a holding pattern. So you decide to use your lips to help you get ahead. But when you are tempted, remember that Ephesians 4:29 says, “Watch the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty come out of your mouth. Say only what helps, each word a gift.” In other words, speak words with grace and honor God in all you do and say.
Instead of constantly searching for what you can do to get ahead, take some time and help someone else achieve their goals. Your actions should tell the world that you are different. 1 John 4:4 NLT says, “But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.” When you go against the natural tendencies and do what is unexpected, you prove to the world that change has come into your life. 2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT tells us, “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” Continue walking in your new life.
