Every living creature knows danger and safety. Babies and infants are unaware of the danger of a given situation, however the adults around them are. A small child could look at the colors of a fire and think it’s beautiful, the adult understand that although we need heat from the fire to cook our food and warm our homes, the fire could be dangerous if it is not under control
Animals are the same; they can tell when danger is near. God prepared animals to provide protection for their young. When you examine some of the strategies these animals use to protect their young, it’s just amazing. The mommy cheetah leaves the pack to raise her cubs. They move very frequently so that predators cannot track them. The skunk has the most foul-smelling secretion that would send a predator running. The bison, as a community, protect their young. The baby animals travel in the middle of the herd. They are surrounded by the females and the males from a circle around the females.
Small animals are no different. The mother hen protects her chicks. She doesn’t have a community like the bison or strong odor like the skunk but she uses her wings to protect her little ones. At the first sign of a predator, she sounds the alarm and the chicks come home to the safety of her wings. If the threat confronts her, she does not back down but opens her wings and is ready to do all she can to preserve her young. This reminds me of Psalm 91:4 NLT. It says, “He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.”
We face attacks from the enemy and need a place of safety. We are not a match for the enemy but in our God we can find the help we need. The CEV says that He will spread His wings over you and keep you secure. That is the place to be especially when we face the uncertainty in the world. These baby animals remain safe because they allow the adults to fight the battle and remain in the place of safety. We too can allow our God to fight our battles and keep us secure . Like David, we can ask our heavenly Father to hide us in the shadow of His wings.
