Jacob’s Memorial

A memorial is something that keeps a memory alive. Do you have a memory that you want to keep alive? In Genesis 28, Jacob had a memory he wanted to keep alive. His family was in turmoil. Jacob had a twin brother Esau. While his father was old and weak, he called for his first-born son to bless him. Their mother heard the conversation and gave his brother Jacob instructions about how to deceive his father so that he could bless him instead of Esau. Jacob did as his mother instructed, and Isaac gave the blessing of the first born to Jacob.  When Esau returned, their father was confused because he blessed someone. He told Esau, “Your brother was here, and he tricked me. He has taken away your blessing.” (Genesis 27: 35 NLT)

Esau became very angry and vowed to kill his brother. Again, their mother intervened and told Jacobto go to her brother. Then, she spoke to her husband to give him a reason for Jacob to leave, she said, “I’m sick and tired of these local Hittite women! I would rather die than see Jacob marry one of them.” (Verse 46) While Jacob was on this journey, he had a visit from the Lord while he slept. He had a dream and he saw a stairway from earth to heaven. “At the top of the stairway stood the Lord, and he said, “I am the Lord, the God of your grandfather Abraham, and the God of your father, Isaac. The ground you are lying on belongs to you. I am giving it to you and your descendants.” (Genesis 28:14.)

This was a special moment in his life. He wanted to remember this moment. God gave him the same promise He gave to his grandfather, Abraham and his father, Isaac. The next morning, he took the stone he used to sleep and set it up as a memorial; he poured oil over it and called the name of the place Bethel, which means house of God.  Do you need to remember God’s blessing? Create a memorial.

Thought for Today: Friend, remember God’s blessings in your life.
