Reverence the Lord!

There was a time when people were mindful of where they were and who was present. If they were close to the church building, they would refrain from using foul language in proximity to the church building, even if the doors are closed. If they saw a godly man or woman, they would be mindful of what the said in their presence. Today there is no fear for God.

What caused the change? We no longer reverence God as a society. The dictionary tells us that reverence is deep respect for someone or something. But for people of faith, it means much more.  Reverence means profound respect and esteem mingled with fear and affection for a holy God. When Moses had an encounter with God at the burning bush, the Lord said, “Do not come any closer. Take off your sandals, for you are standing on holy ground.“ (Exodus 3:5 NLT) When you stand in the presence of God it requires that you take some things off!

Abraham lived a life that demonstrated his deep respect for God. In Genesis 12, God told Abram to leave his country, his relatives and his family and go to a place he did not know. Verse 7 says, “Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your descendants]” And Abram built an altar there and dedicated it to the Lord, who had appeared to him.” An altar is a sacred place set aside to bring offerings to God.  This was not the only alter Abram erected. Verse 8b says, “There he built another altar and dedicated it to the Lord, and he worshiped the Lord.”

When Abram’s herdsmen had a conflict with Lot’s herdsmen, he allowed Lot to choose where he wanted to live, and he went in the opposite direction. Genesis 13:18 tells us, “So Abram moved his camp to Hebron and settled near the oak grove belonging to Mamre. There he built another altar to the Lord.” Abraham was not perfect, but he lived a life of reverence unto God.  Someone said, “Reverence for God impacts how we relate to people. Respect for Him translates into a respectful attitude towards others.”

Thought for Today: Friend, let us fear God.

Have a blessed day and walk in faith and victory.
