What happens when people forget their history? They are prone to repeat some negative experiences. However, if there is strong leadership to remind the people of where they are and how they got there, there might be hope for the future. What if there is no leader to stand in the gap?
The Book of Joshua talks about the process of taking possession of the promise that God made to Abraham. They were in the Promised Land. Then Joshua and all the elders who outlived him died. “After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the Lord or remember the mighty things he had done for Israel.” (Judges 2:10 NLT) What a sad situation.
The verse says that they did not acknowledge the Lord. The word acknowledge means to accept, admit, or recognize something. So, it was not that they were clueless, but that they didn’t want to accept admit or recognize that the God of Abraham. Isaac, and Jacob brought them out of slavery in Egypt with a heavy hand. Yet they refused to acknowledge God. Also, they did not remember or keep in memory all the things the Lord had done.
It’s never a good thing to reject God. “This made the Lord burn with anger against Israel, so he handed them over to raiders who stole their possessions. He turned them over to their enemies all around, and they were no longer able to resist them.” (Verse 14) Sometimes we forget that our actions bring consequences. When we look at our world today, there are those who refuse to acknowledge or remember God. God does not change, and our actions today will generate consequences from God. I pray that that we will acknowledge and remember the Lord, our God.
Thought for Today: Friend, let us accept and keep Your works in our memory.
