One major difference between children and adults is that adults have experiences that will help to navigate the new. When God called Samuel, he had not point of reference. He knew that the only person who was within proximity was Eli, so it must have been Eli. David, on the other hand, had a different experience with God.
David came from very humble beginnings. He was the last of Jesse’s sons and Jesse didn’t see anything that was valuable in this child. One day, Samuel the prophet, went to Jesse’s house. God had rejected Saul as king and God chose one of Jesse’s sons. When Samuel asked Jesses for his sons, he presented every son except David. Samuel knew that the man God sent him to anoint did not pass before him. Samuel asked if there were any more sons. “There is still the youngest,” Jesse replied. “But he’s out in the fields watching the sheep and goats.” “Send for him at once,” Samuel said. “We will not sit down to eat until he arrives.”(1 Samuel 16:11 NLT) There David was anointed in the presence of his family; however, his status in the household remained the same.
When Goliath challenged Israel, David remained at home tending the sheep. When David arrived on the battlefield, his brothers were angry. Yet it was David who slew Goliath and gave them victory. This must have been a high point in David’s life, but it was not easy. Saul recognized God’s chose David as king, so he tried to kill him. The scholars believe that it took about 14-15 years after Samuel anointed David before he became king. But as challenging as the journey was, David knew that God was with him.
But nothing lasts forever, and one day, David was king. I often wonder how his father felt on that day. His son was the king in Israel. If he were able to see that day, it would have impacted his vision of his son. But David knew God was with him through all the challenges he faced. 2 Samuel 5:12 says, David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel, and that He had exalted his kingdom for His people Israel’s sake. It took about 15 years but I’m sure he felt it was worth the wait.
Thought for Today: Friend, wait on God; change will come.
Have a blessed day and walk in faith and victory.
