There are many seasons in life. Sometimes we are happy; sometimes we are sad but, in all seasons, we look to God for strength and direction. There is always the inclination to chart our own course. We believe that we can best decide what we need in our lives. That is the way of the self-made person. Is there another way to get the directions we need?
In Numbers 9, we see God’s people as they journey from Egypt to the Promised land. As they traveled, the presence of God led them with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. “When the cloud moved from its place over the Tent, the Israelites moved, and wherever the cloud stopped, the Israelites camped.” (Numbers 9:17 NCV) The people recognized the importance of directions from God, and they submitted to His authority. As a result, they did not move until the cloud moved.
How many times do we kick and complain when we are reluctant to follow the directions of our leaders? These people left us an example to follow. They did not have their own agenda; their agenda was God’s agenda. “Sometimes the cloud stayed over the Tent for a long time, but the Israelites obeyed the Lord and did not move.” (verse 19) They were not in a hurry; they waited on the Lord. David knew the importance of waiting on God. In Psalm 40:1 he said, “I waited patiently for the Lord. He turned to me and heard my cry.” We are never disappointed when we wait on God. In waiting, we find directions for life. I pray that we will remember this example; “At the Lord’s command the people camped, and at his command they moved. They obeyed the Lord’s order that he commanded through Moses.” (Numbers 9:23) If we really want to experience God’s best, we need to wait on Him.
Thought for Today: Friend, wait on the Lord; He will hear your cry.
