What do we do when we find ourselves in a difficult situation? What happens when the circumstances in our lives make us feel that all hope is gone? Sometimes, it feels that life is difficult, and we have no hope for the future. There is a conflict in our hearts because we love the Lord, but our lives feel hopeless.
The Bible tells us about characters who experienced hopelessness in their lives. When we look at the life of David, he had his moments of hopelessness. Psalm 13:1-2 NLT, “O Lord, how long will you forget me? Forever? How long will you look the other way? How long must I struggle with anguish in my soul, with sorrow in my heart every day?” What was David feeling this way? It is evident that he was experiencing some difficulty and felt abandoned by God.
It’s easy to see that he felt forsaken. Psalm 42:9 he said, “O God my rock,” I cry, “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I wander around in grief, oppressed by my enemies?” We might not have physical enemies but the issues we face invoke that same emotion in us. However, David provided an example about how to proceed in these times. 1 Samuel 30 found David concerned for his life because his men wanted to kill him. Verse 6 AMP says, Further, David was greatly distressed because the people spoke of stoning him, for all of them were embittered, each man for his sons and daughters. But David felt strengthened and encouraged in the Lord his God.
When life gets difficult, we can do what David did and encourage ourselves in God. The word encourage means to inspire with confidence; give hope or courage to. It’s great to have friends to offer encouraging words, but when you find yourself all alone, you can use the truth of God’s word to encourage yourself. “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through fire, you will not be scorched, Nor will the flame burn you. (Isaiah 43:2) We can take David’s example and encourage ourselves in the Lord.
Thought for Today: Friend, in tough times, encourage yourself in the Lord.
Have a blessed day and walk in faith and victory.
