Don’t Be the Underdog!

Who doesn’t like to support the underdog? When we look at a fight and it the opponents seem mismatched, we want the individual with the disadvantage to come out on top. But when is the underdog really an underdog?

When we look at the matchup in 1 Samuel 17, it’s easy to see that the fight was a mismatch. This fight was between David and Goliath. But my question remains who the underdog in that fight was. We learn that the Philistines decided to ‘pick’ a fight. For the most part, people only pick fights they believe they can win. They had a champion, and he knew how to win battles. He was a huge man over nine feet tall! If you have a Goliath in your corner, you can pick a fight and win. The Philistines believed that and so did the army of Israel.

Every day, Goliath showed up and challenged the opposing army to ‘a winner takes all’ match. Everyday they listened to his challenge: “Choose one man to come down here and fight me! If he kills me, then we will be your slaves. But if I kill him, you will be our slaves!” (1 Samuel 17:8-9 NLT)  When they heard those words they ran. One day, David heard the same challenge, but his response was different. He was not about to run from Goliath! In 2 Samuel 16, something happened in David’s life. “So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on.”  (1 Samuel 16:13) David had the anointing on his life. The anointing changes the way you see things.

When the matchup was set, David was viewed as the underdog. David remembered how he defeated the lion and the bear; he went to the brook, and he got five stones. David thought he needed five to get the job done but he needed just one. Why? When David took his first shot, the Spirit of the Lord took over and, in that moment, Goliath became the underdog. 2 Corinthians 10:4 NASB says, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses.” The Spirit of the Lord took David from underdog to champion.

Thought for Today: Friend, the Spirit of the Lord is champion.

Have a blessed day and walk in faith and victory.
