Power in Unity: Singing in Your Prison

In every area of life, people find themselves working together. In schools, students are required to work as a group to accomplish a task. In the workplace, we must work together to get the job done. In sports, teammates work together to defeat their opponent. The same is true for people of faith. The Bible gives us examples of people working together. In Acts 16, there is an account of Paul and Silas as they worked on the mission field. Paul had a vision where he saw a man pleading with him to come to Macedonia  and help them. At this time, Paul was traveling with Silas;  Silas accompanied Paul on this mission, and they engaged in ministry. As they labored, people experienced change as the Lord touched their hearts.

One day, they  had a strange encounter as they were going to the place of prayer. A young slave girl followed them shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, and they have come to tell you how to be saved.”  (verse 17 NLT) You see, this girl had a spirit that enabled her to tell  the future; as a result, her masters became rich. She did this for many days, until Paul became so upset that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I order you to come out of her!” The spirit went out of her that very moment. (Verse 18 GNT)

Her masters became angry, and Paul and Silas were beaten and thrown into prison. Silas did not blame Paul for their predicament; they endured the terrible treatment together. They sat in the prison and began to sing and praise God so loudly that everybody heard them. When midnight came, God sent an earthquake and shattered the chains from their hands and feet. They left us an example of working in unity. There was no ‘I” in this team there was only ‘we.” Let us work together like Paul and Silas where we can encourage each other as we face our prison with praise in our hearts and a song on our lips.

Thought for Today: Friend, God is pleased when we work in unity.
