Help! I Need a New Heart!

When we want to describe ourselves, we choose words that would put us in the best light possible. We choose words that convey strength of character, and high moral integrity. We would prefer words like ethical, honest, and reputable. After all, we are people of good character.

So, it can be quite disturbing to read Jeremiah 17:9 NLT:  The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? Deceitful that words that talks about deception and wicked that says we are evil; and it doesn’t stop there, the Bible says we are very evil. How did God choose those words to describe humanity? As we continue reading, we discover: But I, the Lord, search all hearts  and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.” You see, God gets His information from our hearts.

Our hearts are wicked, and really who can know the motives of the heart? We would like to think we do but we don’t. Sometimes, we can’t even identify the real motives in our own hearts. God examines the heart to root out secret motives. Then He gives due rewards. Knowing that, we need to go before God like David and ask for a clean heart. (Psalm 51:10) He is willing and faithful; He will do what we ask. (1 John 1:9) Lord, help us today to be honest before you and identify the secret motives in our heart.

Thought for Today: Friend, God examines our hearts.
