Pain can make life difficult at times. Julius Caesar said, “It is easier to find men who will volunteer to die, than to find those who are willing to endure pain with patience.” Physical pain can be severe but most of the time, you can find relief with medication and time. Pain in the heart is different; there is no pill to relieve pain in the heart.
Joseph had pain in the heart. He was a young boy who was sold into slavery by his brothers. He went into Potiphar’s house and excelled. Potiphar’s wife had her own plans for him. When he refused, she lied to cover her herself. She said, “My husband has brought this Hebrew slave here to make fools of us! He came into my room to rape me, but I screamed. When he heard me scream, he ran outside and got away, but he left his cloak behind with me.” (Genesis 39:14-15 NLT) Joseph was put into prison and excelled there as well. He did not allow his pain to control his life and helped someone who brought his name before Pharaoh. His wisdom changed his living arrangements. He went from prison to palace.
There was a serious famine that forced his brothers to seek grain in Egypt. They were not aware that the person who would determine their future was their own brother Joseph. He did not choose revenge but repaid their evil with good. (Romans 12: 17-21) Joseph’s heart was different; he recognized God’s hand in the circumstances of his life. There is no denying that pain is painful, but God in His mercy rewarded Joseph. Joseph lavished love instead of seeking revenge because he understood the principle the Apostle Paul stated in Romans 8:28. God uses all the experiences in our life to make us who we are in Him and He rewards the forgiving heart.
Thought for Today: Friend, vengeance belongs to the Lord.
