There are events in our lives that are life changing; some changes are positive and bring joy to our lives while some changes bring pain. At times, we have no control of the situations and at other times, our choices bring change. But whatever change we experience; we need to adjust as we work out the issues in our lives.
We would like our choices to bring us peace and comfort and if that is not going to happen, we quickly abandon our plans. But there are times when we choose a path that is difficult in our desire to give love and support to someone we love. Naomi left her home with her husband and children because they were looking for change. There was a famine in the land, so they left their home in Bethlehem and relocated to Moab. Their sons married foreign wives and soon she lost her husband and sons. However, she heard that God brought change to His people.
As she prepared to return, her daughters-in-law decided to return with her; she discouraged them. One left but the other said, “Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back. Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.” (Ruth 1:16 NLT) Ruth knew that her decision would bring change into her life, but she remained with her mother-in-law anyway. Two women alone without husbands would require the young woman to work to support them. Ruth understood that Naomi had no one else to provide for her and she willingly embraced the opportunity to serve Naomi. Are we willing to serve when we must exchange comfort for service?
