When Compassion Brings Change

We live in uncertain  times and deal with a multitude of issues that those who went before us can even imagine. There is political unrest, uncertainty in the workplace and discord in the family. When we find ourselves amid these situations,  we long for a place of peace and solitude. Where can we find peace?

The only place we can look for peace is in the word of God. There was a woman in Luke 7 whose world fell apart. She lived at a time when women need to have a husband or son to provide for them and she had one son. Her husband was dead, and she was in the process of burying her only son. She faced an uncertain future. As they were going out of the city, Jesus saw her. I don’t know if she knew about Him or heard about Him. But His presence in her situation brought change in her life. When the Lord saw her, He felt [great] compassion for her, and said to her, “Do not weep.” (Luke 7:13 AMP) Jesus had compassion on the woman; the dictionary defines compassion as  recognizing the suffering of others, deeply caring, and then taking action to help.

Mant times we believe that we have compassion;  we talk and walk away, and the individual is left battling the problem. True compassion drives us to action. Jesus acted. He came up and touched the bier [on which the body rested], and the pallbearers stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise [from death]!”   (verse 14)  The woman’s future changed. She no longer faced an uncertain future; her son was restored. Jesus is still in the business of bringing change. His compassion extends to everyone. I, the Lord, invite you to come and talk it over. Your sins are scarlet red, but they will be whiter than snow or wool. (Isaiah 1:18 CEV)

Thought for Today: Friend, how do you respond to Jesus’ compassion?
