What do you do when your children are out of control? Most of us try our best to put them on the right path. What do you do when your children are abusing their office in the house of God and engaging in evil behavior? Well Eli, had that same problem.
Eli, it appears, was very lenient and did not discipline his sons. Yes, he told them to refrain from their evil behavior. (1 Samuel 2:24); but that was as far as it went. Tolerating evil leads only to more evil. (Bob Riley). So, Eli’s sons continued in the evil behavior. Sometimes, when we see evil flourishing that God is unaware or sitting in approval; but that was not what happened here. God sent Eli a message through a man of God; He was going to remove his family from serving as priests but again Eli did nothing. Then God spoke to Samuel: “I am going to carry out all my threats against Eli and his family, from beginning to end. I have warned him that judgment is coming upon his family forever, because his sons are blaspheming God and he hasn’t disciplined them.” (1 Samuel 3:12-13 NLT). Eli and his sons died in the same day.
When men practice evil, God is watching and taking note. So, what do we do as people of faith. In Psalm 37 David said, “Don’t worry about the wicked or envy those who do wrong.” Then he tells us why.” For like grass, they soon fade away. Like spring flowers, they soon wither.” (verses 1-2) Eli’s sons died in battle and Eli fell and broke his neck when he heard the news. He tolerated the evil behavior of his sons, and they became more evil. As people of faith, what do we do when we encounter evil behavior? When like Eli, we tolerate evil, it only leads to more evil.
Thought for Today: Friend, do not partake in other men’s wickedness.
Have a blessed day and walk in faith and victory.
