Love that Covers

One significant component of a community of faith is love. When we are asked to describe what it means to love someone, we have difficulty giving a definition. Sometimes, without God, it would be impossible to love some people Rick Warren said, “God teaches us to love by putting some unlovely people around us. “

Why would God do that? Love is God’s DNA. If we are members of God’s family, we need to love others. Jesus said,” Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” (John 15:35 NLT) You see, God places a high priority on love. It’s imperative for us to show love to those around us if we want to prove to the world that we are His disciples. How can we do that when we are confronted with the worst in people? 1 Peter 4:8 AMP tells us, “Above all, have fervent and unfailing love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins [it overlooks unkindness and unselfishly seeks the best for others].”

Love gives others the benefit of doubt. It allows us to see the best in others. In other words, love covers. So, if my brother or sister engages in behavior that is unlovely, it’s my responsibility to cover. This is not always easy, but we can start where we are and work at it. Love influences what we say and how we say it. Love influences what we do and how we do it. Love covers; love does not expose. As we walk in love, all the other virtues fall into place. “Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:13

Thought for Today: Friend, we love because God loved us first.
