We live in a world today, where selfishness is king. We only care for me, myself, and I. So we see people making decisions based on how much benefit they can receive from it. Steve Maraboli said, “Selfish people tend to only be good to themselves … then are surprised when they are alone.”
As members of the community of faith, we need to be concerned about others. “Abandon every display of selfishness. Possess a greater concern for what matters to others instead of your own interests.” (Philippians 2:4 TPT). The word abandon talks about leaving and not looking back. That is the relationship we need to have with selfishness. How can we be members of the community of faith and practice selfishness when Jesus Christ placed our need for forgiveness ahead of His own?
While we need to be concerned about our welfare, God expects us to put Him first in our lives. When we do, then there will be some decisions that will reflect the needs of others. If we want the world to know God, they need to see His love through us. 2 Corinthians 5:15 tells us, “so that those who live should no longer live self-absorbed lives but lives that are poured out for him—the one who died for us and now lives again.” As we live for Jesus Christ, let us put away selfishness and have genuine concern about what matters to others.
Thought for Today: Friend, put others first.
