The Ministry of Complaining

There are times in life when people take membership in the ministry of complaining. They complain about everything: the Sunday morning service is too long and on another day, it’s too short. They complain about the pastor, and any topic you can mention, they will find a reason to complain. They have a premium membership in this ministry.

You might be surprised to learn that this particular ministry has been in existence for a very long time. In fact, it had its beginning in the Bible. “If only the Lord had killed us back in Egypt,” they moaned. “There we sat around pots filled with meat and ate all the bread we wanted. But now you have brought us into this wilderness to starve us all to death.” (Exodus 16:3 NLT). Again, premium membership in the ministry of complaining. They were enslaved for 400 years with a ruler who told them to make the same number of bricks per day without giving them the straw they needed. “Load them down with more work. Make them sweat! That will teach them to listen to lies!” (Exodus 5:9).

We have become complaining people; if you listen to us, nothing or no one is good enough for us, not even God. These people were just delivered from slavery and instead of being thankful, they were complaining. Instead of waking up each morning with praise on their lips, they longed for the meat in Egypt. I don’t know about you, but I would prefer to eat lentils in freedom than steak as a slave. When we complain and long for the meat of slavery instead of the blessing of freedom, we slap God in the face with our words. Let us revoke our membership in the ministry of complaining and take membership in the ministry of thanksgiving and give God thanks.

Thought for Today: Friend, don’t complain, give thanks.
