Give to Win God’s Approval

How do you offer your gifts to the Lord? Jesus told a parable about two men who came before God with different attitudes. One came before God and touted his own righteousness, while the other acknowledged that he was a sinner. In Genesis 4, we see this same interaction on display between Cain and Abel.

Both brothers brought their offerings to God, but the response from God was different. “It was by faith that Abel brought a more acceptable offering to God than Cain did. Abel’s offering gave evidence that he was a righteous man, and God showed his approval of his gifts. Although Abel is long dead, he still speaks to us by his example of faith.” (Hebrews 11:4 NLT). It is amazing how much of our walk is based on faith. I gather this is why it is called a walk of faith. Abel’s offering was considered an act of faith. His offering gave a glimpse of who he was. The scripture said he was a righteous man; and as a result, God accepted his gifts.

Abel is a good example. He trusted in God;  his reverence dictated the manner in which he gave. Many times, we mistskenly believe that God is impressed with the quantity of our gifts; while God is looking at the heart that gives. Abel’s heart in giving resulted in his offering being accepted. He loved God and desired to please Him so Abel gave his best. Cain, on the other hand, gave. He wasn’t selective in what he gave. He gave God anything. Yet he became angry when his offering was not accepted. Instead of examining his heart and making the necessary changes, he blamed his brother and slew him. Abel gave in faith, and it gave evidence that he was a righteous man and God approved his gifts. I pray that God shows approval of our gifts.

Thought for Today: Friend, like Abel, give an acceptable offering.
