Members of the community of the Spirit are friendly. The dictionary defines a friend as a person you know well and like a lot, but who is usually not a member of your family. In life, we are constantly making friends. If we move to a new community, we will make new friends in that community. It doesn’t mean that we will leave our current friends behind physically and emotionally; we say connected to our old friends as we connect to new friends,
The writer of proverbs tells us: “A friend is there to help, in any situation, and relatives are born to share our troubles.” (Proverbs 17:17 CEV). Trouble! One of the most unpleasant words in the world: it speaks of upheavals, anxiety, health challenges and so much more. That word has a way of intruding in our lives without apology. In those moments, we find help and earthly comfort from those around us, our friends. It does not mean that when tragedy strikes that God is not with us; far from the truth, He is always there in every situation. However, friends can sit with you and listen when times are tough. They can prepare a meal when you are sick.
What does that mean in our lives? It means that we must be people who find ourselves on both sides of the equation; in other words, there will be times when we need help but there will be times when we give help. Why is this important? Society has become selfish and self-seeking. As people of faith, we must be different because we represent our Savior. Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice: “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” (John 15:13 NKJV). Let us endeavor to be loyal friends in the lives of others.
Thought for Today: Friend, let’s be loyal friends and help others when the need arises.
