Friendship and Integrity: An Unbeatable Combination!

There is a character in the Bible who always baffle me; he is Jonathan, the son of King Saul. As the first son of the king, he was the heir to the throne. He was a man of integrity, and I always believe that he would have been a good king. But his father’s sin removed Jonathan as heir. Yet Jonathan chose to be David’s friend.

Bobb Goff said, “Selfless love is always costly; fear can’t afford it, pride doesn’t understand it and friends never forget it.” This quote is about Jonathan. Saul knew that God chose David to be Israel’s king, and he did all in his power to kill David. This did not bother Jonathan in the least and that angered his father. When David saw that Saul was determined to kill him, he decided to leave. When he shared his plans with Jonathan, Jonathan set out to identify his father’s intentions. Saul discovered that Jonathan was protecting David from his  wrath. “Saul was furious with Jonathan and yelled, “You’re no son of mine, you traitor! I know you’ve chosen to be loyal to that son of Jesse. You should be ashamed of yourself! And your own mother should be ashamed that you were ever born.” (1 Samuel 20:30 CEV).

Saul could not understand Jonathan’s actions. He felt that Jonathan should participate in the plan to kill David. You see, Jonathan was a man who walked in integrity and his integrity was not for sale. Integrity is not the words we say but the things we do. Integrity demands that we do what is right even if we suffer loss of position or power. That is what Jonathan did, and Saul could not understand. In his anger, Saul attempted to kill his own son; proving that he was a man lacking integrity. David remembered Jonathan’s integrity and showed kindness to Jonathan’s son.

Thought for Today: Friend, walk in integrity.
