Stand Out: Resist the Desire to Fit In!

Psychologists tell us that it’s human nature to want to fit in and belong. And I believe to a certain extent, they are correct. When children are at play, they want to belong to groups with children they admire. Often, they accept ill treatment and bullying just to remain in that group.

Now we would like to believe that as we get older, we outgrow that desire to fit in. Unfortunately, that is not always true. There are adults who look at others and desperately want to be like them even when their value systems are completely different. When Samuel was a judge in Israel, the people came to him with a strange request. The told him, “Look,” they told him, “you are now old, and your sons are not like you. Give us a king to judge us like all the other nations have.” (1 Samuel 8:5 NLT).

This is a dilemma that has been a challenge for man: the desire to fit in. Here are these  people with a history that is unlike any other. They want to get rid of the one thing that makes them unique, their God. They looked at the other heathen nations with their kings and they wanted one too. They have forgotten that it was not a king but the Almighty God who brought them out of Egypt with a strong hand. They forgot that Moses Law told them that they should not follow the crowd and do what is wrong. ( Exodus 23:2). Stop looking over your shoulder. Nothing or no one can take the place of God in our lives. Don’t trade Jehovah Jireh, our provider,  for a king.
