Distraction is never a good thing. We know how dangerous distracted driving can be. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that distracted driving caused 3,275 fatalities and nearly 325,000 injuries in the U.S. in 2023.
It’s not always easy to identify that you are distracted. We are consumed with the responsibilities of life, and we can become distracted. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” (Luke 10:40 NLT). Jesus was in the house, but Martha’s attention was somewhere else. She was not doing something wrong. Jesus was in the house, and she was preparing for her guest. Nothing is wrong with that. But Jesus was ministering at that time. She was doing the right thing at the wrong time.
Now, Jesus responded to Martha’s request. “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! (Verse 41). We all have details that we need to manage. Mary had a different response to Jesus’ presence in the house; she chose to sit at His feet. In each of us, there is a Martha who wants to deal with details, and there is a Mary who wants to sit at Jesus’ feet. When Jesus is present, don’t be distracted; choose Jesus.
Thought for Today: Friend, don’t allow details to rob you of time in the presence of the Lord.
