Sharpened by a Friend

There are so many things that play a role in becoming who you are. There are things that bring delight and joy, while others bring  sorrow. If it were possible, we would love to take the unpleasant experiences and lock them away so that they are not a part of our lives. “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” (Romans 8:28 NLT)

What do you do when you are in transition to becoming the person you desperately want to be? You look around and you see the qualities you are yearning for in another individual. You are amazed when you identify their qualities and exploits, and they are living your dream life. You have a decision to make. You can stand on the sidelines and just hate that person or you can stay awhile in  their shadow and glean from their experiences, both their joys and sorrow. However, when we view the landscape of our lives, we notice that the most significant gains occurred over the difficult and painful seasons of our lives.

There are both benefits and pitfalls when living and walking in the shadow of someone else; in other words, we can learn from a mentor. Joshua had Moses and Timothy had Paul. As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend. (Proverbs 27:17). You can  gain valuable experience when  you  live and walk in the shadow of an impressive individual on the way to walking in the destiny God has designed for you.

Thought for Today: Friend, identify the mentors in your life.
