God Desires Obedience

There are times in life when we want to do as we please. We want to chart our own course and determine our destiny. Children gain independence from their parents and take that desire for independence into other areas of their lives; some even take that attitude into their relationship with God.

One day, God gave Jonah a directive: “Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh. Announce my judgment against it because I have seen how wicked its people are.” (Jonah 1:2 NLT). There was no place for wiggle room; the directive was clear- go to Nineveh. Jonah decided he had better things to do with his time than go to Nineveh. So, he went down to the port  and booked transportation to go in the opposite direction.

Today, we look at Jonah and shake our heads but in so many ways, we behave like him. There are so many things that take out attention and focus from what God wants us to do. We allow others to direct our focus, and soon we are in rebellion against God’s will and purpose. As parents, we address rebellion against our wishes and desires. God is displeased when we willingly disobey His commands. King Saul chose to do things his way in disobedience to God. “But Samuel replied, “What is more pleasing to the Lord: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams.” (1 Samuel 15:22). It’s better to obey God’s will than try to gain independence from His will and purpose.

Thought for Today: Friend, just obey God.
