Thomas Watson said: The hypocrite deceives others while he lives but deceives himself when he dies. So, we can see that there are many who deceive others with their words and actions. There is a man in the birth of Jesus Christ who deceived the three wise men; His name was Herod.
These wise men from the east understood that a King was born and they wanted to worship Him. Their journey took them though Herod’s palace. They shared their experience and inquired about the baby King. In his heart, Herod was horrified! Who is this baby that would dare to be born in his kingdom! However, he smiled and told them: “Go to Bethlehem and search carefully for the child. And when you find him, come back and tell me so that I can go and worship him, too!” (Matthew 2:8 NLT). The voice of hypocrisy.
The wise men from the east did not give Herod any more information. When Herod realized that they left without complying with his desires, he became angry. Matthew 2:16 says, “Herod was furious when he realized that the wise men had outwitted him. He sent soldiers to kill all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, based on the wise men’s report of the star’s first appearance.” You see, the hypocrite can deceive others only for a time. Eventually their actions expose their heart.
