How do you feel when you extend kindness and help and those you’ve helped forget about your kindness? What does ingratitude say about those who forget? Oliver Goldsmith said, “Ingratitude is a crime more despicable than revenge, which is only returning evil for evil, while ingratitude returns evil for good.”
How do you protect yourself from becoming ungrateful? You look back. When God delivered His people from Egypt, they were overjoyed. The trip across the Red Sea became their freedom walk; the entire journey was a miracle. A short time later, they encountered another problem: bitter water. Then the people complained and turned against Moses. “What are we going to drink?” they demanded. (Exodus 15:24 NLT). Moses threw a tree in the water, and the bitter water became sweet.
When they were hungry, they forgot about God’s mighty works. (Exodus 16:3). They became ungrateful. Looking back allows you to see God’s goodness in your life. When you remember how God showed up in your situation in your past, it encourages you to trust God in your present. An ungrateful heart, is a heart that does not look back.
Thought for Today: Friend, look back; gratitude follows.
