God’s Name is Holy

We live in a world today where people don’t care what they say to you or about you. There is the mistaken belief that they have the right to say what they want, how they want and when they want. However, we are responsible for our words because accountability matters.

Most if not all of us have been the recipients of painful, verbal attacks. It can be painful when the attacks damage your name and reputation. Yet, as people of faith, we misuse and abuse the name of the Lord. We have become so comfortable mistreating others that we behave the same way when it comes to God. We treat his name with disrespect and it’s not a big deal anymore. But there is power in the name of the Lord. “The name of the Lord is a strong fortress;  the godly run to him and are safe.” (Proverbs 18:10).

When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He told them: “Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.” (Matthew 6:9 NLT). Why do we need to keep God’s name holy? God’s holiness is part of His DNA; it’s who He is! When Hannah prayed and God opened her womb and she gave birth to Samuel, in her prayer of thanksgiving she said, “No one is holy like the Lord! There is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.” (1 Samuel 2:2 NLT). She acknowledged the holiness of God; we ought to do the same.

Thought for Today: Friend, treat God’s name as holy.
