Obedience Honors God

There are people who desire to be a leader. While this is noteworthy, the price that one pays for leadership can be extremely high. Leaders do not lead things, they lead people. Training an animal to sit can often be less challenging than guiding individuals who resist leadership.

God chose Moses to lead Israel from Egypt to the promised Land. They left and were on their journey  to the place God promised. As they traveled, they ran into a problem. This was not the first issue they faced but they forgot about God’s ability to provide. The was no water and they demanded that Moses give them water to drink. They said:  “Why did you bring us out of Egypt? Are you trying to kill us, our children, and our livestock with thirst?” (Exodus 17:3 NLT). Moses went to God and God told Moses: “Strike the rock, and water will come gushing out. Then the people will be able to drink.”  (verse 6). But the people developed a lifestyle of complaining.

The second incident without water, God told Moses  to talk to the rock. Moses was frustrated with the complaints, so he disobeyed God. He struck the rock two times. God responded to Moses’ actions: “Because you did not trust me enough to demonstrate my holiness to the people of Israel, you will not lead them into the land I am giving them!” (Numbers 20: 12). The CEV says: “Because you refused to believe in my power, these people did not respect me.”  Moses  disobeyed God: he missed an opportunity to demonstrate the power  and holiness of God. God is holy and we need to treat Him with honor.

Thought for Today: Friend, God is holy.
