Nebuchadnezzar: When Pride Goes Before a Fall!

If you ask people to explain the meaning of pride, you will get a variety of answers. The Cambridge Dictionary defines  pride as a feeling of pleasure and satisfaction that you get because you or people connected with you have done or gotten something good. So, pride is simply pleasure for one’s achievements. However, pride can be a slippery slope.

Pride isn’t tied to status, but it often affects those in power. When God’s people became disobedient and refused to follow His directives, God allowed the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar, to conquer them and take them into exile. God revealed His plan to Habakkuk and he was confused; “Lord, from the very beginning you are God. You are my God, holy and eternal. Lord, my God and protector, you have chosen the Babylonians and made them strong so that they can punish us.” (Habakkuk 1:12 GNT). Nebuchadnezzar never understood that God used him to punish His people and he began to take pleasure in what he considered his accomplishments. One night he had a troubling dream. Daniel interpreted the dream and told him about punishment from the hand of God. Daniel told him, “So then, Your Majesty, follow my advice. Stop sinning, do what is right, and be merciful to the poor. Then you will continue to be prosperous.” (Daniel 4:27)’.

King Nebuchadnezzar did not heed the message from Daniel; he did not believe that anyone had to power to stop him. One day, while looking  at the city he proclaimed: “Look how great Babylon is! I built it as my capital city to display my power and might, my glory and majesty.” (Daniel 4:30). As a result, Nebuchadnezzar spent seven years in the field eating grass like an animal because of his pride. When his sanity returned, Nebuchadnezzar said, “And now, I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise, honor, and glorify the King of Heaven. Everything he does is right and just, and he can humble anyone who acts proudly.” (Verse 37).

Thought for Today: Friend, humble yourself before God humbles you.
