There are moments in life when we find ourselves in a difficult place. We could be in the company of individuals who are walking on easy streets and we are in difficulty. We can be in a happy place and experience distress.
In Luke 7, we find a situation like that. Jesus went to a village called Nain; Nain means beauty of pleasantness and met a woman whose experience was neither beautiful of pleasant. This widow woman was on her way to the cemetery to bury her only son. In these societies, women did not hold jobs. A widow without a son could face extreme poverty and starvation. Life as she knew it had changed forever. She faced an uncertain future. “When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion. “Don’t cry!” he said. Then he walked over to the coffin and touched it, and the bearers stopped. “Young man,” he said, “I tell you, get up.” (Luke 7:13-14 NLT). Jesus’ heart overflowed with compassion. The dictionary defines compassion as a sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it. What did Jesus do? He comforted the mother then He went to the son and spoke life into his dead body.
When we look around us, we see people like this widow woman suffering and those who have to ability to help leave them unattended. There is no compassion. When we read the New Testament, we see Jesus as a man of compassion. When He saw the misery in people’s lives, He acted. Today, we see misery in people’s lives, are we willing to act? You might think that your resources are insufficient. One little boy shared his lunch with Jesus and if fed a crowd of five thousand men plus women and children. (Matthew 14:13-21). Compassion moves you to action. What are you willing to do to help someone in distress?
Thought for Today: Friend, let compassion guide your actions.
