The Problem with Jealousy

There is one truth in life that we cannot escape, we will encounter people who are better than we are. It is an unpleasant fact. We might desire to be taller; they are taller than we are. We might desire to be talented; they are more talented than we are. What do you do when we see what we desire in someone else?

We might believe that this emotion is not something that invades the life of the successful but that is not true. The dictionary defines jealousy as a feeling of unhappiness and anger because someone has something or someone that you want. We see that when we watch a television show. Someone hurts another to get their possessions or their position. But the Bible has a different view of jealousy; you see, jealousy is a result of an evil heart. Proverbs 14:30 NLT says: “A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body; jealousy is like cancer in the bones.”  Cancer is deadly; these actions of that evil heart are a result of selfishness that leads to conflict and division. It can separate families and friends and destroy communities.

People from all levels of society display jealous behavior. “For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder [unrest, rebellion] and every evil thing and morally degrading practice.” (James 3:16 AMP). We are in control of our emotions; we can choose how we respond to another’s blessing. When we consider that God is the blesser then we can be happy with God’s blessing in another’s life. God does not play favorites; He will bless you too. Let us not quarrel with each other or be jealous, (Romans 13:13).

Thought for Today: Friend, jealous is a sin against God.
