Have you ever seen a son that reminds you of his father? We are inclined to say. “Like father, like son.” Sometimes it’s true and sometimes it’s the opposite, father and son are completely different. With Saul and his son, Jonathan, the latter is true; they were different.
King Saul faced a dilemma; God rejected Saul as king because of disobedience. It was not one infraction; Saul developed a lifestyle of disobedience, and he reaped the consequences of his actions. When David killed Goliath, he recognized God’s hand on David’s life. He decided to kill David. Jonathan, Saul’s son, recognized that David would be king but responded differently; he was David’s loyal friend. David and Jonathan devised a plan to evaluate what was in Saul’s heart . Saul’s response told him all he needed to know: As long as that son of Jesse is alive, you’ll never be king. Now go and get him so I can kill him!” (1 Samuel 20:31 NLT). Jonathan was devastated; he struggled to comprehend the depth of his father’s wickedness.
Jonathan saw something in David that his father couldn’t understand. Jonathan was a young man who walked in integrity and David was his friend. Jonathan understood and accepted that David would be king, and David promised to remember his family. Jonathan felt calm, confident that God’s will would be accomplished. Jealousy is evil and vile and will destroy you from the inside out. God gives different gifts to different people; find out where your gifting lies and work at operating in that gifting. Jealousy says that God made a mistake creating you the way you are. Accept who you are and what God placed in you.
