The Root of Betrayal

Has someone close to you, like a friend or relative, ever let you down or broken your trust? Yes? Unfortunately, it’s not an isolated incident because it happens more often than you think. How did you feel? It is not a pleasant experience.

Even Jesus experienced this problem, as He was betrayed by one of His twelve disciples  Betrayal does not happen in a vacuum; it is the result of an evil heart; the root of betrayal was in Judas long before he made a deal with the chief priests and captians. He was angry when he saw a woman anointing Jesus’ feet with expensive ointment. “That perfume was worth a year’s wages. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor.” Not that he cared for the poor—he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples’ money, he often stole some for himself. (John 12:5-6 NLT). Judas loved money and lacked character. He didn’t serve because he loved Jesus or people; Judas served for benefits.

Are you aware that there are people with that same mentality interacting with us today? You may wonder why they do the things they do. Luke 22:3 says, Then Satan entered into Judas Iscariot. His lack of character and integrity coupled with his love for money led him down the slippery slope of betrayal. Jesus didn’t allow Judas’ actions to deter Him; He remained faithful to His mission and went to the cross. Do not allow the betrayer’s evil heart to deter you from your mission.

Thought for Today: Friend, don’t become distracted by evil actions.
