Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it. Psalm 34:14 NLT
Choices! Life is full of choices. The choices you make will impact your life either negatively or positively. This verse requires you to choose. It’s one of those choices that you make directly or indirectly. So you are admonished to turn away from evil and instead, do good. It sounds so simple but at times it can be very difficult. Paul acknowledged the difficulty in Romans 7:15, he said, “I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate.”
Doing good is sometimes difficult because it goes against your natural human desires. In the face of mistreatment, the flesh, your human nature, wants to get even. There is a desire to return to the law that says an eye for an eye. But, to do what’s right involves turning away from your desire to get even and instead, doing what is right before God. It may seem difficult, but it’s not impossible with the help of God. If you fail, it’s not the end, you can try again. If you search for peace instead of getting even, you are doing what’s right and good. Then God gets the glory.
