So above all, guard the affections of your heart, for they affect all that you are. Pay attention to the welfare of your innermost being, for from there flows the wellspring of life. Proverbs 4:23 TPT
In every life, there are precious items. Things that are valuable require special protection. So you don’t have to wonder what people consider valuable because it dictates how the item is treated. If you have an inexpensive glass bowl, you use it daily. But your heavy crystal bowl, that is valuable so you only use it only on special occasions.
So the scripture says to guard the affections of your heart because they affect who you are. What does that mean? Well if you feed your heart on evil, hateful things then that is what will come out of you. Matthew 15:18 AMP says, “But whatever [word] comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this is what defiles and dishonors the man.” The Apostle Paul gives an alternative in Philippians 4:8, he said, “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” Educate your heart with the word of God.
The heart controls your speech. It’s not difficult to identify what is going on in the heart of a man, all you have to do is listen to the words he says. Your speech will betray the condition of your heart. Luke 6:45 says, “A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.” It’s impossible to guard the affections of your heart without watching your words. Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their words.” Watch your words and choose to speak life; your words tell the world about the condition of your heart. Your heart is a valuable commodity because your heart determines your character. Guard it well!
