He sat down and called the twelve apostles. He told them, “Whoever wants to be the most important person must take the last place and be a servant to everyone else.” Mark 9:35 GW
The market place if full of ideas of what you can do to be successful. It seems that just about everyone has a series of steps for you to follow so that you can be as successful they are. So people purchase these items not realizing that their purchases are making those individuals successful. When they realize that the master plan is not working for them, they are disappointed.
In this verse, Jesus gave his disciples the secret to getting ahead. There is a desire in man to sit at the head of the table. We see those desires front and center when we hear about power struggles. We mistakenly believe that power struggles happen only in government circles and big business. But wherever people gather in a community, there is a forum for a power struggle. There are power struggles in families and in the workplace. There are power struggles in the classroom and playground. There is no environment that is immune to power struggles.
Jesus knows that there is a tendency in man to step over each other to get ahead and people of faith are just that, people. However, in the Kingdom of God, kingdom principles take priority. In the Kingdom of God, you don’t fight with your fellow brother or sister to get ahead; in this kingdom, you get ahead by serving. It sounds crazy but that is what the Word of God says. If you want to be important, take the last place and serve. That is definitely not what those who want to get ahead want to hear. This is also recorded in Matthew 23:11. It says, “The person who is greatest among you will be your servant.”
Jesus placed high priority on service. He looks at our actions differently. In the world, you push everyone aside and step on them to get ahead. In the kingdom, humility is valued. In Matthew 18:4 AMP Jesus said, “Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” So the road to greatness in the kingdom of God is paved with humble service.
Thought for Today: Friend, serve others with humility.
Have a blessed day and walk in faith and victory.
Stay humble and God will exalt you.
