What is prayer? Well different people would have a different response. What most people agree on is that prayer is communication. The difference is to whom the prayer is directed. The dictionary states that the communication is between man and either God or an object of worship. As people of faith, we know that it’s communication with God.
For the most part, we pray because we want something. Shocking, but true. When you listen to prayer offered, there is usually a need mentioned and the expectation of a reply is noted, also. But should that be the way we approach God in prayer. If all is well with us, is there a reason to pray? For many, even people of faith, would say no that is not true with their mouths, but their actions contradict them. So, if we are not just praying because we want something, why should we pray?
Jesus told a parable about prayer that began like this, “One day Jesus told his disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up.” (Luke 18:1 NLT) God expects to always pray; 1 Thessalonians 5:17 “Never stop praying.” Prayer builds our relationship with God. Jesus, although He was part of the Godhead prayed all the time. Jesus was teaching all day, and the people were hungry. “And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.” (Matthew 14:19) Jesus was the perfect example of prayer.
Prayer gives us the power to stand in temptation. Matthew 26:41 says, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Last week we saw what happened when Peter failed to pray. God gives benefits when we pray. Matthew 7:11 says, “If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” Talke time to pray and develop your relationship with God.
Thought for Today: Friend, take time to communicate with our heavenly Father.
Have a blessed day and walk in faith and victory.
Prayer, the foundation of every Christian relationship with God.
