Do It Afraid!

Elisabeth Elliot said, “Sometimes when we are called to obey, the fear does not subside, and we are expected to move against the fear. One must choose to do it afraid.” This is the predicament of Ananias, believer in Damascus.

The believers at that time were afraid of Saul of Tarsus. Acts 8:3 NLT says, “But Saul was going everywhere to destroy the church. He went from house to house, dragging out both men and women to throw them into prison.” As a result, the believers were afraid of him. One day, as he was going to Damascus to terrify the believers in that city, he had an encounter that changed his life. “As he was approaching Damascus on this mission, a light from heaven suddenly shone down around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting me?” (Acts 9:3-4 NLT)

Saul had no idea who was speaking to him. “Who are you, lord?” Saul asked. And the voice replied, “I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting!” (verse 5) Saul had to go and wait until God  sent someone to minister to him. When God spoke to Ananias, to send him to minister to Saul, Ananias was confused. He said, “But Lord, I’ve heard many people talk about the terrible things this man has done to the believers in Jerusalem! And he is authorized by the leading priests to arrest everyone who calls upon your name.” (verses 13-14)  After talking to the Lord, Ananias went and prayed for Saul as the Lord desired.

There are times when we must choose to obey even if we must do it afraid. Ananias did not allow his fears to prevent him from being obedient to God. Saul became blind on the road to Damascus. After Ananias prayed, Saul’s sight was restored. Jesus sent Ananias on a mission; he was afraid but moved against his fear and did it anyway.

Thought for Today: Friend, obey anyway.

Have a blessed day and walk in faith and victory.
