When Friends Become Family

Look at this quote: “There are friends, there is family, and then there are friends that become family.” Have you found a friend like that in your life? Today we would look at a woman in the Bible who had that experience. That relationship brought joy and happiness to her life.

In the Book of Ruth, we meet a family who lived in Bethlehem. Elimelech, and his wife Naomi, left their home because there was a famine in the land. They went into Moab and settled there. It is ironic that Elimelech  left Bethlehem, ‘the house of bread,’ in search of bread during a famine. He went when the grass appeared greener and died in Moab. He had two sons who married Moabite women and they died also. Naomi was alone in Moab. “Then Naomi heard in Moab that the Lord had blessed his people in Judah by giving them good crops again. So Naomi and her daughters-in-law got ready to leave Moab to return to her homeland.” (Ruth 1:6 NLT)

Naomi and her daughters-in-law set off to return to her homeland; however, she sent them back. One woman left while the other woman, Ruth remained. There was nothing Naomi could say to discourage Ruth from the journey. Ruth told her mother-in-law: “Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back. Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. Wherever you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord punish me severely if I allow anything but death to separate us!” (Verses 16-17

Ruth remained with Naomi, and  worked in the fields to provide food for them. In return, Naomi decided to find a husband for Ruth. When Boaz met Ruth, he heard about her kindness to her mother-in-law. In the end, Boaz married Ruth and they had a son. “Then the women of the town said to Naomi, “Praise the Lord, who has now provided a redeemer for your family! May this child be famous in Israel. May he restore your youth and care for you in your old age. For he is the son of your daughter-in-law who loves you and has been better to you than seven sons!” (Ruth 4:14-15)

Rust was a friend who became family.

Thought for Today: Friend: there is provision in your Bethlehem.

Have a blessed day and walk in faith and victory.
