It’s impossible to live and walk on this earth and not encounter friction. Friction is a part of life, both our day-to-day existence and our walk of faith. The dictionary says that friction is the resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another. You might be saying I don’t want that to be a part of my life.
Is it possible to identify friction in everyday life? Well think of walking on the street. When the road is rough, there is frictional force that allows us to walk without falling. But when there is ice on the road, there is less friction and much more difficulty to stay upright. When I was a teenager, we were walking to take the bus home on a wintery night. There was ice so less friction. As I began to slip on the ice my brother saw me and rushed to keep me from falling. I remained upright but he fell. Moving quickly on smooth services can be dangerous both for people walking and cars driving. In those moments, we welcome friction.
How does friction affect us in our walk with God? We experience friction in our interpersonal relationships. Psychology tells us that interpersonal relationships are the connections and interactions, especially ones that are socially and emotionally significant, between two or more people. We like our connections to run smoothly without friction, but Proverbs 10:12 NCV says, Hatred stirs up trouble, but love forgives all wrongs. Yes, we will experience friction because it is a part of life but think of friction as the growing pains you experience in your faith. The only way to grow in love is to experience friction. As we grow in our love walk, we will learn how to forgive wrongdoing . It’s not easy but it’s possible.
