Actions Have Consequences: Choose Wisely!

We teach children to be responsible. They must be able to distinguish what is right and what is wrong. Why? They are solely accountable for their behavior, and the world will evaluate them based on their actions. Knowing this, parents do their best to instill these values in their children.

As children grow, the level of responsibility grows. When this happens, the level of accountability changes. In Genesis 3, God evaluated a series of actions and held all the participants accountable. So what happened? God gave directives to Adam. “But the Lord God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden— except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.” (Genesis 2:16-17 NLT)

Simple and to the point. There is a fruit in the garden that you must leave alone. What did they do? They behaved like children and listened to a voice that was contrary to God’s directives. When we stray from what God commands, it leads to sin. The enemy will do all in his power to entice us to disobey God. He was successful in Genesis 3. God punished Adam, Eve, and the serpent.

Sometimes, we believe that consequences apply to others but not us. Yet every participant was punished. God is holy and wants no part with sin. Even though God punished all, He promised the offspring of the woman to strike the serpent’s head. The offspring is Jesus Christ. He would restore the fellowship between God and man that was broken in the garden. Thank God for His grace. Julia H. Johnston said it this way: Grace that is greater than all our sin.

Thought for Today: Friend, God will punish sin.
