Take My Hand, Lord

There is a saying that people love to quote when things go wrong: A setback is a setup for a comeback. Yet, this statement, though encouraging, would fall on deaf ears in the life of Thomas Andrew Dorsey. You see, in 1932 he lost both his wife and his newborn son.
Thomas Andrew Dorsey was born in Georgia but moved to Chicago. He was a secular musician who suffered a severe illness and that experience led to his conversion. He joined Pilgrim Baptist Church and served as the choir director for forty years. He is known as the Father of Black Gospel Music. He combined traditional gospel music with jazz and blues.
While he was a young man, he got married and they were expecting their first child. He had an engagement as the soloist for a revival in St. Louis. He was reluctant but decided to attend the event…

When God’s People Pray

Sometimes it’s good to reflect on your life and today I was doing just that. Last school year, I was in a new grade and my district chose new math and ELA curriculums. So in addition to that, everything else was new to me. It can be overwhelming when you have to master the curriculum while teaching the program.
It requires long days at work, long nights at home and sometimes very little sleep. After a while, your body begins to say. “I’m not taking this anymore!” Mine did and I got up one morning, not feeling the best but I thought I could make it. You know what I’m talking about when you pretend you are ok but you are as sick as a dog.
Sometime before my day began, someone came to see me and had difficulty understanding what I was saying. My voice was so soft she…

Don’t Fear: Trust God

Though a mighty army surrounds me, my heart will not be afraid. Even if I am attacked,I will remain confident. Psalm 27:3 NLT
War is a terrible time for everyone. It’s stressful for soldiers and civilians alike. It’s especially difficult for the people who live in the war zone; it’s a time of uncertainty and fear. What would you do if you were captured by the enemy? In times of war, parents worry about their children; husbands worry about their wives and everyone is concerned about their safety. Yet David expressed confidence in God’s ability to protect him even if he was surrounded by the enemy.
David was a man who had many experiences with God. He learned in his difficulties that he could trust God. He said, “TheLordis for me, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?” Psalm 118:6. Here is…

The Shepherds Praised God

Every society needs a variety of individuals to provide for the needs of their community. Some job descriptions are considered honorable while some are deemed unimportant. One lesson we have all learned from this pandemic, is that everybody has value. The job description that society considered unimportant was rated highly important and necessary during those dark months.

Most people hate working at night. On this particular night, shepherds were in the field. They were counting the hours to go home and go to sleep. Suddenly, there was a strange sighting in the sky and they were terrified. It was an angel. He was there to announce the birth of Jesus. Then, there were angels in the sky praising God.
Luke 2: 15 says, When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s see this thing that has happened, which the Lord…

Follow the Sign

All right then, the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virginwill conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us’). Isaiah 7:14 NLT
In life people are always looking for signs. I’m sure people who lived one hundred years ago, knew how to read the signs in the skies that told them that rain was coming. Sometimes, you listen to the prediction of the weather and you get outside and you shake your head. But as the day progresses, the change begins to happen; the temperature begins to drop creating the weather for snow. The prophet Isaiah told the people, “The Lord will give them a sign.” Sometimes sign posts can be misdirected by accidents or the power of nature. But when the Lord gives a sign, it stands firm.
When God created man, His…

Make a Difference with Love

Therefore ifthere isanyconsolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if anyaffection and mercy, fulfill my joyby being like-minded, having the same love, beingofone accord, of one mind. Philippians 2:1-2 NKJV
One of the things I hated as a child was a conditional promise. So you want something and you can only get the desired item on the condition that you fulfill some requirement. That was not always a bad tradeoff but sometimes the conditions could be really bad. You find yourself agreeing to do something you absolutely don’t want to do, because it was the only way to get what you wanted.
Here, the Apostle Paul wanted to ask the community to engage in a particular action. But, he just didn’t blurt out his request. Instead, he began with some if then statements. He said, “Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ.”…

The Greatest Joy

My fellow believers, when it seems as though you are facing nothing but difficulties, see it as an invaluable opportunity to experience the greatest joy that you can! James 1:2 TPT
There are seasons in life wheneverything is difficult. Life seems to be one hardship after another. You are at your wit’s end and you just cannot deal with one more crisis. Then what comes into your life? Another crisis and you are overwhelmed. But, James is saying, change the way you look at what is happening in your life. Don’t look at your circumstances like the worst thing that has happened to you, instead see it as an opportunity to experience joy beyond measure.
How can my difficulty bring joy when I hurt so badly? Well first of all, that battle you are facing is not yours. You are not in that battle alone. That is enough to bring…

Strength and Peace

The Lord gives his people strength. The Lord blesses them with peace. Psalms 29:11 NLT
This verse has two words that most people want to see in their lives: strength and peace. When you think of strength, what comes to your mind? When the average person thinks of strength they think about physical power. Physical power is great, but if that is all the strength you have, you definitely have a problem. So many times people find themselves in situations that test their ability to cope. They are overwhelmed and have no idea what the next step is. But the Word says that God gives his people strength.
God is not talking about strong muscles here. Instead, it’s strength that comes from the inside. Strength that can stand when there is chaos and confusion all around you. Can physical power soothe the pain of loss? There is a strength that…
