Love: Foundation of Harmony

I love to listen to choirs and groups. There is nothing more pleasing to the ear than musical harmony. The dictionary defines harmony as a combination of parts into a pleasing or orderly whole. In music we have harmony  when two or more voices sing different notes together and the result is pleasing to the ear.

Colossians 3:14 NLT says, Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. I wonder why the translators used the word harmony in this verse. This word was used in many translations. When I think of harmony in music, it is often the result of deliberate action. The members of the group get together and spend time working on their musical piece to perfect their performance. Their desired outcome is something that is pleasing to the listener.

As members of the community of faith, we also need to take deliberate action. The Apostle Paul gave the church some directives concerning the lifestyle of members of the community of faith. First, there are some things that we need to get rid of: the lifestyle of the old man doing things to gratify the flesh. Next, we need to exercise forgiveness because we were forgiven. Then we need to clothe ourselves with love. You see, there is no unity without love. It’s love which brings out harmony in the community of faith. I’m not saying that we will not have issues where we disagree. But we should recognize that we disagree on issues, but we love each other. We all show love differently; some of us feed the hungry while some clothe the naked. Some visit the sick while others care for the fatherless. All these activities are the notes that bind us together in perfect harmony.

Thought for Today: Friend, let us work together in the perfect bond of unity.
