Rewarded for Exceptional Service

Every assignment is different, and teachers understand that better than most. Every year you greet a different group of students to nurture for the new school year. Some years you believe you have the best class possible and there are the years that you want to pull the blanket over your head and stay in bed. But, regardless of the assignment, our response should be the same: do it as unto the Lord.

Ruth was a young lady from a pagan background; her knowledge about God came from her mother-in-law. Yet when she had the opportunity to return to the life she knew, she chose to remain with her mother-in-law and serve her God. She was aware that life could be difficult, but she was committed to the task before her. There was something about the God Naomi spoke about that seem to make the journey worthwhile. Naomi felt defeated,  and blamed God for her problems. (Ruth 1:21)  However, Ruth saw something that drove her to journey to Naomi’s homeland.

When they arrived, they had no food. Ruth approached her mother-in-law: “Let me go out into the harvest fields to pick up the stalks of grain left behind by anyone who is kind enough to let me do it.” Naomi replied, “All right, my daughter, go ahead.” (Ruth 2:2 NLT) Ruth faithfully went into the field to work so she could provide for them. She was diligent and the community noticed her devotion to Naomi. There are so many opportunities to go the extra mile in service to others, but few are willing to do so if they cannot benefit from what they do.

As Ruth took care of Naomi, Naomi began to explore arrangements to bring change in Ruth’s life. Naomi loved her and wanted what was best for her. One day Naomi said to Ruth, “My daughter, it’s time that I found a permanent home for you, so that you will be provided for. (Ruth 3:1) She instructed Ruth and Ruth obeyed. God blessed Ruth and she married Boaz. Ruth’s love, devotion and faithful service made a difference in her life. Ruth is one of the women mentioned in Matthew 1 when Matthew recounted Jesus’ ancestors. The quality of your service will make a difference in your life.

Thought for Today: Friend, serve lovingly and faithfully.

Have a blessed day and walk in faith and victory.
