Striving Towards Maturity in Christ

Living things grow and change and in our life of faith, we are expected to grow and change. We tend to see change as a negative thing. However, when we think about babies and their checkup, the doctors are looking for change. The degree of change informs the doctor’s next step. As people of faith, God expects us to grow and change.

When Jesus walked the earth, one day He was hungry and saw a tree in the distance. Seeing a lone fig tree at the roadside, He went to it and found nothing but leaves on it; and He said to it, “Never again will fruit come from you.” And at once the fig tree withered. (Matthew 21:19 AMP). The dictionary defines unfruitfulness as not producing fruit. I’m not a farmer but when I plant a tomato plant, I’m looking for fruit. The same is true for God; He is looking for spiritual maturity in our lives. (2 Peter 3:18)

If you need a place to begin, look no further; Colossians 2:7 NLT says, “Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” One of the functions of the root is to anchor the plant in the ground. In nature, the plants will encounter wind and rain; only those plants with a strong root system will survive. If we want to be successful in our walk of faith, we must anchor our roots in Christ. Guess what? You don’t have to do it alone. And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. (Philippians 1:6). Praise God! Spiritual maturity is possible.
