Jehovah Shalom: The Lord Is Peace

The dictionary defines peace as freedom from disturbance. When we use that definition to describe peace then we are all lacking peace. Is it possible to experience peace when you are greatly disturbed? Let’s look at Gideon in Judges chapter 6. At this time, the people were in great distress because their sin  brought consequences. Gideon was hiding  in a cave threshing wheat because the Midianites wouldn’t destroy his crop. Yet during their oppression, Gideon had an encounter that changed his life; while he was hiding, he had an encounter with the angel of the Lord.

The angel used a most unusual salutation when he met him;  “Mighty hero, the Lord is with you!” (Verse 12). Gideon was confused; “Sir,” Gideon replied, “if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all the miracles our ancestors told us about? Didn’t they say, ‘The Lord brought us up out of Egypt’? But now the Lord has abandoned us and handed us over to the Midianites.” (Verse 13). Gideon was so focused on what was happening around him that he was unable to perceive what he heard. But it didn’t end there, the Lord gave him clarity;  “Go with the strength you have, and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I am sending you!” (Verse 14). Poor Gideon, that clarity brought fear into his heart and the excuses began. Can you relate to that? We are looking for a resolution but when the Lord lays His hands on us, we say, not me Lord, that individual over there is more qualified.

But as Gideon continued to interact, he recognized that the Lord was with him. He set up an offering and the Lord touched the offering with his staff and burned up the offering. That was an eye-opening experience for Gideon because he understood that the Lord was with him. As a result, he built an altar and called it the Lord is Peace. His external situation was the same but his encounter with God brought peace. Jehovah Shalom, the Lord is Peace can speak peace into your uneasy situation. He is the Prince of Peace!
