In the beginning of the year, churches tend to engage in prayer. For some, it is a yearly activity; there is no purpose, and, in the end, there is no benefit. Then there are other churches who pray with purpose because they are looking for change. The objective is to see change in the hearts and lives of the members because when the members experience change, the church community will experience change.
2 Kings 18 talks about an event in the life of King Hezekiah. He was not the typical king because most of them did evil in the sight of God. King Hezekiah trusted God. (2 Kings 18:5). However, he had a problem, King Sennacherib of Assyria decided to attack King Hezekiah and Judah. Hezekiah tried to be respectful to the powerful Assyrian king but nothing he could say or do seem to pacify the king. The Assyrian king decided to bully King Hezekiah and attack his God. The bullying was designed to mentally weary the king and cause the people to lose hope.
Then the Assyrian king sent Hezekiah a letter. It stated, “Don’t let your God, in whom you trust, deceive you with promises that Jerusalem will not be captured by the king of Assyria. You know perfectly well what the kings of Assyria have done wherever they have gone. They have completely destroyed everyone who stood in their way! Why should you be any different?” (2 Kings 19:10-11 NLT). But Hezekiah took the letter to the Lord and engaged powerful, passionate prayer. (2 Kings 19:15-19) Although the Assyrian king was powerful, he was no match for the power of Hezekiah’s God.
God answered Hezekiah’s prayer. One day while the Assyrian king was worshipping his gods, two of his sons assassinated him. (2 Kings 19:27). We do not have to fear everyone and everything. In every arena of life, we find bullies. But we do not have to walk around in fear, we serve a God who has a history of dealing with bullies. When the bullies threaten, do like Hezekiah, take them to God in prayer and watch God work.
