Anyone who knows me knows that I love my garden a lot. I take special care and choose the plants I invite into my garden space. If you are an invasive, do your own thing, kinda plant, you have to go in a pot. You see, I take my garden seriously. After all my preparation and care, my seeds have sprouted and are doing well. Then, I had the invasion of the squirrels. They destroyed my seedlings! Damaged my potted plants, I shook my head and wondered: Why did Noah take squirrels in the Ark? Didn’t they wreck his garden?
As I pondered on this, I knew the answer. Noah was obedient to the Lord’s command. God didn’t choose Noah by accident; He knew that Noah was the man for the job. Genesis 6:8 NLT says: “But Noah found favor with the Lord.” Noah was different. While the lifestyle of the day was doing evil, Noah lived a life of integrity in the midst of evil. God knew he could trust Noah to take even the pesky squirrels on the Ark.
True obedience does not look at how the action affects you; genuine obedience is doing God’s will because that is what God desires. Was obedience easy for Hosea when God directed him to marry a harlot? God wanted to speak to the nation about their sin, so Hosea’s wife was the object lesson to speak to the nation. She was not a faithful wife. “Then the Lord said to me, “Go and love your wife again, even though she commits adultery with another lover. This will illustrate that the Lord still loves Israel, even though the people have turned to other gods and love to worship them.” (Hosea 3:1) Hosea obeyed; he put obedience to God ahead of his personal desires. That is why Noah took the squirrels on the Ark; he was focused on obedience, not the seedlings in his garden. What seedlings are taking your attention from obedience to God?
Thought for Today: Friend, obedience can be costly.
